What is Acupuncture?

The ancient art of healing through acupuncture dates back to over 5,000 years ago. It is performed by inserting very fine, sterile single-use needles into bio-active points, as well as points of pain. It is a common misconception that acupuncture is exclusively employed as a pain management tool; however it serves a much broader purpose. It may also regulate hormones (such as increasing dopamine and serotonin production), regulate the nervous system, reduce swelling, increase circulation, and help encourage weight loss. Acupuncture also strengthens immunity, which results in less “under the weather” days, and enhances mental clarity. It will noticeably increase energy levels, reduce stress, and help alleviate or eliminate pain and allergies.

Some other reasons to get acupuncture include mental/emotional, respiratory, sinus/eye/ear disorders, gastrointestinal, neurological, musculoskeletal issues, sleep disorders, autoimmune disorders, and more. Some have even used acupuncture to avoid various types of surgeries!

It is recommended to avidly use acupuncture in your preventative care routine, before any symptoms become exacerbated. For some, treatments are recommended every or every other day (ex. acute sciatica, acute injuries, shingles, etc.), while others attend weekly or monthly for maintenance.

Retaining the results from acupuncture treatments varies based on the specific type of health challenge that is being treated(acute vs. chronic). Acupuncture works best as a cumulative treatment- as such, acute conditions may be alleviated in 1-2 treatments (and occasionally chronic), as opposed to most chronic conditions which require 10-20 treatments. No two people or reactions to treatments are alike. Your practitioner will guide you on a personalized journey to healing.

Side Effects: The most common side effects include bruising at the needle site, minor bleeding, soreness, and a “healing crisis” (a temporary worsening of symptoms, which typically leads to drastic improvements). Side effects may vary. It is advised to report any symptoms to your practitioner as they develop.
